Now in its third year, Porsche Classic hosts its nationwide Restoration Challenge, giving dealerships the opportunity to return a beloved Porsche sports car from the 1950s to the 2000s to its original glory. Participating dealers will acquire a car that requires some expert technical work and oversee the progress of the vehicle as it undergoes restoration in the most qualified hands possible – Porsche-trained technicians who will have a portfolio of more than 80,000 unique Porsche Classic Genuine Parts at their disposal. Over 60 dealers are expected to participate in the 2023 edition of the Challenge.
Changes to the Challenge this year include the debut of three individual categories for dealers to compete in. Blue Grass MOTORSPORT is competing in the Preservation segment for 2023.
“The response from the Porsche community and our participating dealerships for the past two years has been tremendous. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch a classic Porsche vehicle go through a well-documented, step-by-step restoration that the challenge expects, and the results certainly show,” said Jonathan Sieber, Senior Manager, Porsche Classic at Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA). “We’ve added new elements to the competition this year, which we believe will really resonate and capture the full range of capabilities and creativity from our dealers.”
This special 1993 911 Carrera has special ties to the team at Blue Grass MOTORSPORT. It was originally sold to a friend of the current Dealer Principal, Jim Haynes. As the first Porsche vehicle owned by Jim’s friend, it kickstarted a lifelong passion for the brand with many subsequent Porsche vehicles to follow. This vehicle was recently sold back to Jim for use in the 2023 Porsche Restoration Challenge in the Preservation category.
First debuting in 1988 for the 1989 model year, the 964 generation of the Porsche 911 was a thoroughly modernized version that also retained a strong lineage to its predecessors. Both comfort and performance had been enhanced, bringing this timeless sports car into the 1990s. Its air-cooled “Mezger” flat-six engine remains coveted among driving enthusiasts for its unmistakable sound and evocative power. 964 values continue to skyrocket into collector car status for this very reason.
