Choosing the Right Tires for Your Porsche

You drive a Porsche for a reason. Perfected performance remains a core component of Porsche’s engineering, and if you’ve ever had the opportunity to take your “daily-driver” to the track for a day of excitement, you certainly have an understanding of this thrill. In fact, the only part of your Porsche which actually comes in contact with the road are your tires. Since they play such a critical role in performance, Porsche has integrated tire development alongside the vehicle development process.

If your vehicle is in need of replacement tires, choosing Porsche approved tires is the best way to ensure that your Porsche will continue to perform like new. Simply provide us with some simple information and Blue Grass MOTORSPORT can highlight several choices for your next set of Porsche tires — all approved for your specific Porsche. Complete the short form below and we’ll gladly reach out to you via e-mail or contact you by phone to discuss your options with you.

2019 Porsche 911 N-Spec Tires

Porsche Approved Tires (N-Spec)

Original Equipment Porsche tires are commonly referred to as N-Spec tires. The sidewall markings on these tires are branding with the markings N0, N1, N2, N3 and so on. This “N” designation is for Porsche approved tires and the corresponding number refers to the version. Higher numbers are assigned to newer generations of the tire.

Our recommendation is that only matching tires should be used on Porsche vehicles. Since many Porsche models are equipped with staggered tire sizes on the front and rear axles, it’s important to match the tire make, type, and N-specification. If your Porsche was originally delivered with N-specification tires which have been discontinued or are no longer available, it’s recommended that all four tires be replaced with a higher numeric N-specification design appropriate for your vehicle.

Porsche Winter Tires

It doesn’t require inches of snow or sub-zero temperatures for performance tires to lose their effectiveness. Performance tires are designed to stick to the road through the use of softer compounds to help them achieve this grip. As the rubber gets colder, they lose their stickiness as the compound gets much harder. Once the temperature dips below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, Porsche summer tires lose traction and become ineffective — even on dry road surfaces.

In order to get maximum performance throughout harsh winters, we recommend Porsche winter tires for your vehicle unless you intend to store your Porsche until the spring thaw. Continental WinterContact, Michelin Alpin, and Pirelli Winter Sottozero are great options for maintaining confident handling through the frigid temperatures and snow accumulation. We proudly stock an extensive selection of Porsche winter wheel and tire sets and we’ll be happy to advise you on the best choice for your Porsche. Porsche Tire Maintenance

Maintaining Your Porsche Tires

If you own an everyday passenger car, you might be accustomed to expecting 30,000 or 40,000 miles out of your tires. Due to performance-focused engineering, Porsche tires rarely last that long due to the specialized handling characteristics they possess. Since many Porsche vehicles have staggered tire sizes on the front and rear, tire rotations are out of the question. On models like the Porsche 911, it’s not uncommon for the rear tires to wear twice as fast as the front tires.

In order to get the most life from your tires, we recommend maintaining the correct air pressure as recommended by the factory. While it’s true that lower tire pressures can improve grip, they also will cause accelerated tire wear. In addition, tires can lose a pound of pressure per month. Routinely checking that your tires have the correct pressure can increase the lifespan of your tires and save you money in the long run.

Due to the shorter lifespan of Porsche tires, our recommendation is running your performance tires only in the warm summer months and then make the switch to a second set of winter tires as the weather gets colder. Now that each set is only used on your car for half the year, you’ll help extend the life of both sets of tires over the life of your Porsche. You won’t sacrifice on performance which is exactly why you drive a Porsche in the first place.
