Porsche vehicles deliver outstanding power and downright sublime handling in a wide variety of segments and body styles. But when it comes to sedans, there is an extra layer of options. When shopping for a Porsche sedan, you have the option to choose from three different forms of propulsion, gasoline, electricity, or a mix of the two in the form of a plug-in hybrid. Two of these are available with the Panamera, while the all-electric sedan option from Porsche is the Taycan. There are a number of important differences between the two models, but just as many important similarities, and most important of all is that they’re Porsche through and through.

First up, we’ll look at some similarities between these two seriously impressive sedans. The Taycan and Panamera obviously have very similar styling, and part of the reason why is that they’re basically the same size. One is a bit longer, the other a bit wider, but the differences are very minor. Porsche manages to package the two entirely different drivetrains into sedans that are really close in size. This allows the buyer to pick a vehicle based on more than just how much luggage it will hold or whether it will look good parked in front of the restaurant. Both sedans excel at these things in the same way, so you don’t have to make compromises if you prefer one mode of propulsion over the other.

Here we can see some of the differences between the Porsche sedans. The Taycan offers quite a few more trim options, although not all of them offer different horsepower ratings. This is because the Taycan is available in two different body styles, the sedan body that we’ve looked at before, and a wagon-bodied version called the Cross Turismo. This version has another 1.4 cubic feet of rear cargo space, and another 0.7 inches of ground clearance. Some of the trims have the same name, but different ratings, such as the Taycan 4S having 536 horsepower, while the Taycan 4S Cross Turismo has 590. But the Turbo and Turbo S share both trim names and power ratings across the sedan and Cross Turismo. The quickest of the Porsche sedans is the Taycan Turbo GT, and when it is equipped with the Weissach Package, drops the Turbo GT’s 0-60 time from 2.2 seconds to 2.1 seconds, and comes with a number of track-ready enhancements, most noticeably the fixed carbon fiber wing on the back.
Things work a little differently for the Panamera, since there are two different options for powering this Porsche sedan. There are two trims for the gasoline-only Panamera, the base model and the Panamera 4. These have the same horsepower rating, but the all-wheel drive on the Panamera 4 gives it a slightly quicker 0-60 time. Rear-wheel drive is standard on the base trim of both the Panamera and the Taycan, but since the E-Hybrid drivetrain is only used in the upper trims of the Panamera, there is no RWD E-Hybrid. That said, the Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid is a full two seconds quicker to 60 mph than the base Panamera, and has the highest top speed of any Porsche sedan.
There is something for everyone in the Porsche sedan lineup. Though there are only two model names, the combined 2 body styles, 3 drivetrains, and 15 trims make for an expansive range. While it’s normal for Porsche to offer several different performance levels for a given model, the Porsche sedan range offers buyers the unprecedented option of choosing their preferred level of electrification as well. And no matter which you choose, it will come with the poise, luxury, and style that you have come to expect from the Porsche range of vehicles.
